What is a bad sector?

A bad sector is the area on hard drive surface that got corrupted and no longer allows reading or writing data to that section. A single or even a few bad sectors do not render your hard disk unusable, but at times, bad sectors tend to multiply and increases day by day and you will have problem in accessing the hard disk data if you do not take necessary actions immediately. It makes the areas of the disk unusable and unreadable. At that time data present in the further sectors may be lost or inaccessible but other sectors remain unaffected and usable.

Types of bad sectors:

There are two types of bad sector hard bad sectors and soft bad sectors.

  • Hard bad sectors: It means the disk is physically damaged and it generally happens because of a head crash. If your system is exposed to extreme heat or has faulty mechanical parts that allows head to contact disk surface. It cannot be fixed but can be prevented.
  • Soft bad sectors: It occurs when an error correction code found in the sector is not matching the content of the sector; it faces a logical error not physical ones. These types of bad sectors can be repaired by overwriting everything on the drive with zeros

Symptoms of a bad hard drive:

  • Computer screens may  freeze for a time and does not allow you to access the files
  • The system is constantly asking you to scan the drive at boot up using an inbuilt disk repair application
  • You may also encounter an error message like “Cyclic Redundancy Error”, indicating that drive has bad sectors.

Factors that lead to creation of bad sectors on the hard disk are highlighted below:

  • Due to Over clocking
  • Exposed to Overheat
  • Power surges
  • Extreme read or write operations
  • Usage of same hard drive
  • Malware Attack

Bad sectors on hard drive cannot be fixed, but can be marked as unusable so Operating System will not try to store files on that sector. Whenever a hard disk controller detects a bad sector, it replaces bad sector with the spare ones. Some hard drive has fewer numbers of spare sectors while some has a large number of spare sectors. Disk controllers manage to remap bad sectors by hiding them from the Operating System. So OS does not allow the bad sector to store any data. Thus any sector of your hard drive is corrupted or the files were deleted using "Shift + Delete" key, Windows cannot find the location of those files. However, you can undelete Windows files, using a right software and you can get this application by visiting this link.

Some preventative measures can be taken in order to avoid loss of files due to bad sectors. You should always have a complete backup of your important files to restore them back after losing. You should also avoid doing work on a computer when there are power fluctuations. After taking all these precautions if you still lose data from your hard drive due to bad sectors then you can use hard drive Recovery software. It can recover 300 file types from various storage media. You can perform data recovery from bad sector hard drive on Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2003 & 2008. It also employs data recovery from flash drives such as USB drives, SD cards, Fire wire drives, etc.

This wonderful software also facilities to perform file recovery from various brands of external HDD such as Toshiba, Hitachi, WD Passport , Seagate, etc. . For further info go this site http://www.recover-data.org/how-to-from-wd-passport.html
